Experience Level: Easy

If you’re not tired of looking at water (because goodness knows, New Zealand has a lot of it!), head to Esson’s Valley just beyond Picton to discover the track to Humphries Dam. The walk takes you through native forest along the way until you eventually arrive at the picnic area alongside the dam itself.

Picton to Waikawa Track

Location: Picton/Waikawa

Duration: 50 minutes one way

Experience Level: Moderate

Starting from Picton Marina, this walking and cycling track takes you over to Waikawa Marina, promising some excellent views along the way. Once at the other end, make sure to take a look at the Waikawa Foreshore Reserve for a relaxing spot by the marina with picnic and toilet facilities available.

Hilltop View (Tirohanga Track)

Location: Picton

Duration: 1 hour 30 minutes

Experience Level: Moderate – hard

For the most commanding views of Picton, you can’t go passed the Tirohanga Track. As the name might suggest, you’re going to have to slog up a fairly steep track to reach the summit, but trust us, the views are well worth the sweat and tears. Just picture being treated to panoramic views of Waikawa, Picton and the mesmerising Queen Charlotte Sound.
